This was a very interesting, if sometimes slightly boring read!
I loved how much there was to learn about different cultures and some parts of history, and I was deeply impressed by Layard's descriptions of scenery and his archeological finds.

It did get a bit dense in the second half, and I felt like there were too many digressions from the actual topic of ancient Assyria. This is only my personal experience, however, and I think if one took more time with this book, these passages could be very instructive and fascinating as well.
